What is the difference between an Open Mic & an Open Jam?
To answer this question you need to know:
What is an Open Mic? An Open Mic is a forum with just a stage and a microphone where a solo artist/small act such as a singer, acoustic instrumentalist, comedian or spoken word artist can go on stage and perform in front of a live audience.
What is an Open Jam? An Open Jam is a forum with a band where any musician or singer can sit in with the existing band by either replacing a musician in the band or joining in with additional instruments and singers. In most cases musicians and singers are performing on the fly with no practice or rehearsal. Songs sometimes are cover tunes or completely improvised.
There are many exceptions to these rules such as:
Open Mic's geared specifically to singers where there is a house band. The band members remain the same throughout the night and only the singers change
Open Jam's where no one is allowed to perform a cover and everything must be improvised on the fly
