The youngest of three children, Carolyn was born shortly after her mother immigrated to Toronto from Jamaica in the late 1960s. Shaping Carolyn’s musical talents began with her early exposure to music, ranging from her mother’s taste in reggae and calypso to her oldest brothers’ Supertramp, Genesis and Rush records. Young and impressionable, she absorbed every lyric and note like a sponge.

Music continued to play an integral role during her school years. As a member of the choir and band, she secretly yearned to emerge as a soloist and honed her impressive vocal range by practicing at home every day after school. Carolyn finally made her public solo debut in her senior year of high school, when she performed Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, in front of her peers, teachers and family.  The energy she felt on stage that night was the strongest adrenaline rush she’d ever had!

Some twenty years later, it’s that same energy that continues to drive Carolyn’s career forward. She has fronted bands like Cobra Kings & Project Phoenix at festivals such as the renowned Toronto Beaches International Jazz Festival and the Taste of Little Italy. Her musical persona reflects the influences of acid jazz, from musical groups like the Brand New Heavies and Incognito; soul, from artists like Chaka Khan and James Brown; and funk from acts like Stevie Wonder and Jamiroquai.

Carolyn’s most recent success has been as front woman for the “Carolyn T Band” www.carolyntband.com, formed in 2007. They were featured on CITY-TV’s Breakfast Television in advance of “Diva Night 2008,” an evening concert gala she developed from scratch to highlight Toronto’s top female musical talent. The event stands out as one of Carolyn’s proudest accomplishments.

To continue giving back to her musical peers, Carolyn organizes, hosts & MC’s, along with her band, a successfully popular Open Jam Night @ Harlem Restaurant. Started in April 2009, and now a weekly event, it provides an open environment for Jazz, Soul and R&B musicians to self-promote, network and collaborate.

Carolyn and her band have also supported their community by headlining at events such as the “Think Pink” fundraisers held in 2007 and 2008, to benefit the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, and by creating and hosting the “Diva Night 2009 Mother’s Day Fundraiser”, in support of the Weekend to End Breast Cancer.

After many requests, Carolyn has recently added her services as a voice coach to her repertoire, drawing on her years of professional experience to help clients improve their skills.

The Carolyn T Band continues to draw a growing fan base from her performances at clubs in the Greater Toronto Area and other major cities across Ontario, and is attracting attention at the national and international stages.

Carolyn T is a talented, powerhouse vocalist with a soulful vocal style. This, combined with passion, graciousness, diligence, and tenaciousness, makes her stand out amongst the brightest stars of Toronto’s music scene!
